Biographical Sketch

Hongbao Zhang completed his undergraduate studies in Physics at Beijing Normal University before attending Peking University for his Masters in Particle Physics under the supervision of Prof. Chongshou Gao. He received his PhD in Astrophysics after spending one year with Prof. Zonghong Zhu at Beijing Normal University and two years with Prof. Achim Kempf and Dr. Federico Piazza at Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics and University of Waterloo. Prior to returning Beijing Normal University as an assistant professor, he held a postdoctoral position at University of Crete, and FWO Fellow at Vrije Universiteit Brussel and The International Solvay Institutes.

Research Interests

Hongbao Zhang has long been interested in fundamental issues in physics, such as general relativity, quantum field theory, and quantum gravity using the framework of string theory. During the last few years, his interests have focused mainly onto the highly interdisciplinary frontier of fundamental physics, namely AdS/CFT correspondence and its applications. As an explicit holographic implementation of quantum gravity in asymptotically AdS, a large class of quantum field theories, including the quark-gluon plasma and strongly correlated electron systems, are mathematically equivalent to quantum gravities with one extra dimension. In particular, with this holographic duality, some hard quantum many body problems can be mapped to easy classical few body problems. Hongbao Zhang's goal is to develop both analytical and numerical methods to tackle those questions from strongly coupled systems by using general relativity and string theory.
